Testing
Cylinder Heads
Dissection and careful analyses has been performed to understand cooling pockets, port wall thickness and other vital components of the 944 cylinder head
Flow Bench Testing
Porting heads is 75% science and 25% black magic! Its always good to test out theories. Until proven, they are just theories!
For example – you always see ‘flow bench’ numbers at max lift in a steady state of flow. The valve is in that position for milliseconds during normal operation. Flow at minimum lift is a big deal is getting the maximum total quantity of charge per cycle…..but you never hear about those numbers!
Dyno Testing / Tuning
Big can of worms here! Dynos are extremely useful in tuning engine….but not very useful at all in comparing results. There are many brands and different types of dynos. The typical less expensive dynos (inertia) are simply a heavy drum that is accelerated by the vehicle. It measures the rate of acceleration to calculate torque (then it converts that to HP). Electric (Current-Eddy) Dynos measure the force being applied to turn the drum.
Either one can be accurate if maintained and calibrated on a very regular basis. The advantage of the Current-Eddy dyno is that you can run the vehicle at a constat speed with changing load – very useful for ‘real world’ tuning, You can’t tune part throttle with an inertia dyno (you probably can but it would be a long drawn out process in volving many part throttle full pulls!)
And yes, you can cheat the results on all dynos very easily. With a little manipulation my riding lawn mower could indicate 500hp…..
